Time To Connect

Sorry it has been a while!  Hopefully this week will have more entries.

Tonight was amazing for two simple reasons:

First, I was able to sit and have coffee with my father-in-law for a good portion of the evening.  I love my dad, and I thoroughly enjoy talking with him about whatever.  But this whole concept of marriage has more than a few hidden gems, like the opportunity to have two father-like figures in your life.  You have the opportunity to draw from two wells of knowledge and experience, as opposed to one.  And thankfully, both for me are pretty amazing examples to follow.

Secondly, my wife and I just finished talking for a couple hours.  And talking about really important topics such as community involvement and our spiritual lives.  We don't really have many chances to talk like this, as any parent will tell you.  It's hard enough to be intimate physically, so carving out a couple hours to really focus and communicate on topics of deeper meaning can be challenging.  Maybe we (as a culture) don't feel the need to do this because it isn't as rewarding in the here-and-now.  Like so many things we want a quick turnaround.  In our food preparation, our heartburn medicine, our parenting...we are on immediate reward highs, disconnected from the richer rewards that come from perseverance.  But perhaps that is a topic for another day.

All of this was to bring up the importance of connecting.  I've made it a high priority to connect with Hoss in some way everyday, be it playing or reading or cuddling.  I've let connecting with other adults, even my own wife, slip to the wayside and tonight has really been a great awakening of that importance.  And how sometimes it has to be scheduled, and other times it just has to be chosen (as opposed to watching the most recent Lost episode).

So, my challenge to you is to make an effort to purposefully connect with someone today or this week.  Let me know how it goes....
